Originally built as the offices of the Glasgow Herald newspaper, this building was Charles Rennie Mackintosh's first major public commission and now serves as Scotland's centre for design and architecture. A helical staircase climbs up through the building to a viewing platform, giving one of the best free views over Glasgow's rooftops, a genuine highlight for children who enjoy the climb. Changing exhibitions on the lower floors cover design, architecture and the city's own building history. Its central location makes it an easy stop while exploring the surrounding streets. Entry is free, and while most floors are accessible, the viewing platform is reached via stairs.
