About this place

Interactive attraction with illusions, puzzles and rooftop views.

Opened in 1853, Camera Obscura is one of Edinburgh's oldest visitor attractions, built around its original rooftop device - a periscope-like optical instrument that projects a live, moving image of the city below onto a viewing table, still demonstrated to visitors much as it was in Victorian times. Below the rooftop, several floors of illusions, holograms and interactive puzzles give plenty more to explore, mixing genuine optical science with simple fun. The rooftop terrace itself offers one of the best free-standing views down the Royal Mile. There's an admission charge, and while most floors are accessible, the historic building includes some stairs.
