Standing at the foot of the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse remains the monarch's official residence in Scotland, and its state rooms, decorated with historic tapestries and portraits, are open to visitors when not in royal use. Mary, Queen of Scots lived here for much of her reign, and the palace grounds include the atmospheric ruins of Holyrood Abbey, founded in the 12th century, alongside gardens that back directly onto Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat. An audio guide helps bring the history to life for children less familiar with the various monarchs connected to the building. There's an admission charge, and while the grounds are largely accessible, the historic palace interior has some stairs.
