Once a fashionable Victorian seaside resort, Portobello retains a proper promenade lined with cafes, ice cream shops and colourful beach huts, all just a short journey from Edinburgh's city centre. The sandy beach itself is wide and popular with families for paddling, sandcastles and long walks, particularly in the evening when the light over the Firth of Forth is often spectacular. It's one of the few places where a genuine seaside day out is possible without leaving the city, which makes it popular year-round rather than only in summer. It's free to visit, with parking on nearby streets and cafes close at hand.
