This grand 19th-century mausoleum, built for the 10th Duke of Hamilton as an extravagant final resting place, holds an unusual claim to fame as having the longest echo of any man-made structure in Europe, with a single handclap or spoken word reverberating for around 15 seconds inside its domed chamber. Guides sometimes demonstrate the echo during visits, which tends to be a genuine highlight for children even before the building's history is explained. Its scale and grandeur reflect the Duke's reputation for lavish spending during his lifetime. There's an admission charge, and while the site is largely accessible, the historic building has some steps.
