One of Scotland's largest and finest medieval castles, set above a bend in the River Clyde.

Regarded as one of the largest and finest examples of medieval castle architecture in Scotland, Bothwell Castle was fought over repeatedly during the Wars of Scottish Independence, changing hands between Scottish and English forces several times as each side recognised its strategic value above a bend in the River Clyde. Its substantial remains, including a well-preserved circular tower, give a genuinely strong sense of the castle's original scale and importance. The riverside setting adds to what's already one of the more visually impressive castle visits in the wider Glasgow area. There's an admission charge, and the uneven stonework makes much of the site unsuitable for buggies.
