Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd lives on the slopes near Glenmore, descended from animals brought over from Sweden by herder Mikel Utsi in 1952 after he noticed how well-suited the Cairngorms were to them. Guided hill visits, weather permitting, take small groups up to meet and hand-feed the herd on the open hillside, which is a genuinely memorable experience for children rather than a typical zoo encounter. The walk up is moderate rather than strenuous, but it does depend on where the herd happens to be grazing that day, so visits can be cancelled in poor weather. There's a charge for hill visits, with a shop and paddock area at the base for those who can't make the walk.
