This 15th-century castle stands right at the water's edge in Broughty Ferry, guarding the mouth of the Tay, and now houses a free museum covering local history alongside the estuary's wildlife and the area's once-significant whaling industry. Views from the upper floors take in the river and the beach below, giving a good sense of why the castle was originally built in this position. It's a compact visit, easily combined with time on the adjacent beach, and works well as a shorter stop rather than a full day out. Entry is free, though the historic stairways mean it isn't fully accessible throughout.
