Rising steeply above Aviemore, this National Nature Reserve protects one of the best examples of ancient birch woodland in Scotland, with waymarked trails climbing through the trees to viewpoints over the town and the wider Spey valley. Peregrine falcons nest on the reserve's crags in season, and the reserve is also known for its population of the rare, near-mythical-sounding Kentish glory moth. The climb is a genuine hill walk in places rather than a flat stroll, so it suits families with a bit of stamina. Its position right above Aviemore makes it an easy, no-car-needed outing for anyone staying in the town. It's free to visit, with limited parking near the entrance, and the paths involve steep, sometimes uneven sections.
