About this place
NTS walled garden and estate near Castle Douglas, with a farmland walk out to a moated island castle.
Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, Threave combines a well-tended walled garden near Castle Douglas with a longer walk out across farmland to a ruined moated tower house on a small island, once a stronghold of the fearsome Black Douglases under Archibald the Grim. A hide along the farmland walk gives a good chance of spotting red squirrels, adding some wildlife interest to the historical walk. The combination of formal garden and wilder estate walk gives plenty of variety for a family visit. There's an admission charge, a cafe on site, and while the garden is accessible, the walk to the castle is longer and less buggy-friendly.
