Branded Scotland's Food Town, Castle Douglas has built its identity around an unusually high concentration of independent bakers, butchers, cheesemongers and other food producers along its high street, reflecting the strong farming and dairy tradition of the surrounding Galloway countryside. It's a good spot to pick up a picnic for the day's onward travels, or simply to browse shops with a more old-fashioned, specialist feel than a typical supermarket-dominated town centre.
