This ruined 12th-century abbey sits at the heart of the town of Kilwinning, and it holds a particularly notable claim in Scottish tradition as the birthplace of Freemasonry in Scotland, with the town's masonic lodge tracing its roots back to the stonemasons who worked on the abbey's original construction. What survives of the abbey today gives a good sense of its original scale, despite centuries of damage and stone-robbing for other local buildings. It's a compact site, easily explored within a short visit. It's free to visit, and the uneven ground within the ruins makes it unsuitable for buggies.
