The grounds surrounding Duns Castle, still a private family home, are open to the public as a nature reserve, with waymarked walks through woodland and around Hen Poo, a small loch that attracts a good range of waterfowl. The estate's mature trees and varied habitat give it more natural interest than a typical municipal park, and the castle itself, glimpsed from parts of the walk, adds some historic atmosphere without being open inside. Its position on the edge of Duns makes it an easy, no-car-needed outing for anyone staying in the town. It's free to visit, with parking nearby, and the main paths are largely manageable, though some sections are uneven.
