Free local museum with hands-on exhibits, topped by Scotland's oldest working camera obscura.

Housed in a converted 18th-century windmill tower overlooking Dumfries, this free museum covers the town's local history through hands-on exhibits, while the tower itself is topped by Scotland's oldest working camera obscura, installed in 1836 and still projecting a live image of the surrounding town much as it did nearly two centuries ago. The climb up to the camera obscura room is a highlight for most children, followed by the novelty of watching the moving image on the viewing table. The museum below is free, with a small charge for the camera obscura itself, and the tower's spiral stairs make it unsuitable for buggies.
