Perched on cliffs above the Firth of Forth near North Berwick, with Bass Rock visible offshore, Tantallon was for centuries the stronghold of the Douglas Earls of Angus, one of Scotland's most powerful noble families, and its massive curtain wall still dominates the headland despite the castle's ruined state. The dramatic coastal setting makes it one of the more striking castle visits in the Lothians, and family trails help explain its history along the way. Historic Environment Scotland manages the site, with an admission charge for entry. The cliff-edge position means care is needed with young children, and the uneven ground makes it unsuitable for buggies.
