Set within a quiet loop of the River Tweed near St Boswells, Dryburgh is often considered the most beautifully situated of the Border abbeys, its ruins framed by mature trees and lawns that give it a particularly peaceful atmosphere. It's the burial place of Sir Walter Scott, whose grave lies within the abbey grounds, as well as Field Marshal Douglas Haig, the British commander during much of the First World War. The riverside setting makes it a pleasant spot for a walk even without a strong interest in the history. There's an admission charge, and the uneven stonework within the ruins makes it awkward for buggies.
