Perched on a rocky promontory just outside Oban, Dunstaffnage Castle dates back to the 13th century and has long been associated with the Campbells of Argyll, who still hold the title of hereditary keepers. Much of the curtain wall and one of its round towers survive well enough to give a strong sense of the castle's original scale, and the position gives sweeping views over the surrounding bay and out towards Mull. It's a quieter, less crowded historic site than some of Argyll's better-known castles, run by Historic Environment Scotland. There's an admission charge, and the uneven stonework underfoot makes it unsuitable for buggies.
