Standing on the banks of the River Tay, Dunkeld Cathedral combines a still-used parish church with the atmospheric ruins of its medieval choir, damaged during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century and never fully repaired. The grounds and ruins can be freely explored, with the riverside setting, framed by some notably tall trees, giving the whole site a particularly peaceful feel. Dunkeld itself, with its handsome 17th-century houses rebuilt after the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689, makes for a pleasant wander before or after visiting the cathedral. It's free to visit, with parking in the town, and while the grounds are largely accessible, the ruined sections have uneven stone floors.
