Unique triangular moated castle surrounded by a nature reserve.
Caerlaverock's unusual triangular shape, ringed by a water-filled moat, makes it one of the most distinctive castle ruins in Scotland, built for the Maxwell family and fought over repeatedly during centuries of Border conflict with England. Its twin-towered gatehouse remains one of the most impressive surviving pieces of medieval castle architecture in the country. The surrounding nature reserve, part of the same site, adds birdwatching and woodland walks to a visit for families wanting more than just the castle itself. There's an admission charge, and while the grounds are largely accessible, the castle's stone stairs and uneven floors are not buggy-friendly.
