About this place
Free waterfront museum in Lerwick covering Shetland's history, boats and culture.
Housed in a modern building on Lerwick's Hay's Dock, this free museum covers the full sweep of Shetland's story, from its geology and archaeology through to the Norse era, the herring boom and the islands' distinctive Fair Isle knitting tradition. A floating collection of historic boats is moored right outside, and the galleries mix real objects with hands-on activities that hold younger visitors' attention well. It's also the best place on the islands to learn about Up Helly Aa, Shetland's midwinter fire festival, complete with a replica Viking galley. There's a cafe on site looking out over the water, and the whole building is step-free, making it a reliable rainy-day plan for a Shetland trip.
