Standing on a small loch-side promontory on the edge of Lerwick, Clickimin Broch was built around 2,000 years ago and remains one of the best-preserved examples of these distinctive circular Iron Age towers, unique to Scotland's northern and western coasts. Its position right within walking distance of Shetland's main town makes it one of the easiest ancient monuments in the islands to visit without needing a car, and visitors can walk right inside the broch's surviving walls and chambers. Information boards explain what's known about how the broch was originally used, likely as both a defensive structure and a high-status home. It's free to visit, with parking nearby, and the uneven stonework makes it unsuitable for buggies.
