Hydro dam with a viewing chamber to watch salmon leaping upstream.
Built in the 1950s as part of a hydroelectric scheme, Pitlochry Dam holds back Loch Faskally and includes a fish ladder allowing salmon to bypass the dam on their way upstream to spawn. A viewing chamber lets visitors watch through glass as the fish make their way past, with numbers particularly high in early autumn during the main salmon run. The dam and surrounding paths also make a pleasant, level walk beside the loch, popular with families regardless of whether any fish happen to be passing at the time. It's free to visit, with parking and a small visitor centre on site.
