About this place
One of the best places in Europe to see dolphins from the shore, on the Black Isle near Fortrose.
Chanonry Point, on the Black Isle near Fortrose, is regularly ranked among the best places in Europe to see dolphins from dry land, thanks to a narrow channel here that forces the Moray Firth's resident bottlenose dolphins close to shore as they hunt, particularly around a rising tide. No boat trip or special equipment is needed, just patience and a bit of luck with timing, though the dolphins are seen often enough that many visits are rewarded with at least a glimpse. A lighthouse marks the point itself, and the pebble beach gives an easy, flat spot to watch from. It's free to visit, with parking nearby, and the beach is manageable for most families, though not ideal for buggies.
