Traquair claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, with a history stretching back over 900 years, and it's famous for its Bear Gates, locked shut after a visit by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and, according to family tradition, not to be reopened until a Stewart king is restored to the throne. A working brewery on site produces Traquair House Ale using recipes and equipment with genuine historical roots, and a hedge maze in the grounds is a reliable hit with children. There's an admission charge, and while the grounds are largely accessible, the historic house involves narrow stairs.
