Restored to recreate its 19th-century working days, Inveraray Jail uses costumed characters and reconstructed courtroom scenes to bring the history of crime and punishment vividly to life, including cells that visitors can walk into and hear about the conditions prisoners actually faced. It's a genuinely engaging, hands-on visit for children rather than a dry museum, with plenty to touch and try along the way. The building sits right in the centre of Inveraray, easy to combine with a walk along the loch shore or a stop at the castle. There's an admission charge, and the historic layout means some areas involve stairs.
