Family days out in Orkney
Neolithic villages older than the pyramids, on a cluster of islands off the north coast.
Orkney's archaeology is the draw — Skara Brae and the standing stones at Brodgar are genuinely five thousand years old, and even young kids tend to sense that these aren't ordinary ruins.
It's a ferry or a flight to get here, so a visit tends to mean a few days rather than a single outing, but the islands are small enough to cover a lot of ground once you're there.
