Region guide

Family days out in Dumfries And Galloway

Forests, dark skies and a quiet coastline in Scotland's south-west corner.

This is the region people drive through on the way to somewhere else, which is a shame — it has some of the best forest parks and cycling trails in the country, plus a coastline that stays quiet even in August.

It's also officially one of the darkest places in Europe, so if you're staying over, it's worth timing a walk for after dark — not all of these days out have to happen in daylight.
