Free days out in Glasgow with kids
Glasgow has more free family attractions than anywhere else in Scotland. Here's how to string a week of them together without spending a penny on entry.
Glasgow has more free family attractions in one place than anywhere else in Scotland, and you can string together a full week of days out here without paying a single entry fee.
Start with the big three
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is the one most people think of first, and it earns that spot — a Spitfire hangs over the main hall, and the collection is broad enough that a restless visit still finds something. It has parking and toilets on site and is fully accessible, though it isn’t somewhere to bring the dog.
Riverside Museum, down on the Clyde, does the same trick with transport instead of art — historic vehicles and trains kids can get close to, in a building that’s just as easy to park at and get around.
Round it off with Pollok Country Park, Glasgow’s largest, where Highland cattle graze near woodland paths and Pollok House. It’s the one of the three that’s dog friendly, if that matters to your day.
If you want to spend money on one thing
Make it Glasgow Science Centre. It’s the exception on this list — there’s an entry charge — but the interactive exhibits, IMAX and planetarium make it worth treating as the one paid stop in an otherwise free week.
Green space when the museums are done
Beyond Pollok, Glasgow’s playparks are worth knowing by name rather than just wandering into the nearest one — Kelvingrove Park Playground sits right by the gallery if you want to follow the museum with a run-around, and Tollcross Park and Victoria Park are solid options on the other side of the city.
Before you go
- Free entry doesn’t always mean free parking — check each listing’s parking flag rather than assuming.
- Kelvingrove and Riverside are both step-free throughout; smaller local museums vary more, so check accessibility if it matters for your family.
- Pollok Country Park is dog friendly; most of the indoor museums on this list are not.
