Standing on a distinctive twin-peaked volcanic rock above the River Clyde, Dumbarton Castle has one of the longest recorded histories of any fortified site in Britain, having served as a stronghold since at least the early medieval period. Mary, Queen of Scots sailed from here as a child on her way to be raised in France, and the castle later became an important artillery fort guarding the approach to Glasgow. The climb up the rock rewards visitors with sweeping views over the Clyde estuary towards the Highlands. There's an admission charge, and the steep steps up the rock make it unsuitable for buggies or those with limited mobility.
