Built in 1883 and funded by the Coats thread-making family, this observatory has been recording weather and astronomical data continuously ever since, making it one of the longest-running observatories of its kind in Scotland. Visitors can see historic telescopes and instruments still in working order, alongside exhibits explaining astronomy and meteorology in terms accessible to children. Occasional evening stargazing sessions let visitors look through the telescopes themselves, weather permitting. Its central Paisley location makes it an easy stop to combine with the rest of the town. Entry is free, and the museum galleries are accessible, though the dome itself involves stairs.
