Red sandstone abbey ruin in New Abbey, named for the heart of its founder's husband.
This red sandstone ruin in the village of New Abbey takes its unusual name from its founder, Dervorgilla of Galloway, who had the abbey built in memory of her husband, John Balliol, and reportedly carried his embalmed heart with her for the rest of her life before it was buried with her at the abbey. The substantial remains, including a largely intact central tower, still convey the scale of the original 13th-century building. It's a compact, easily explored site rather than a sprawling one, well suited to a shorter stop. There's an admission charge, and the uneven ground makes it awkward for buggies.
