This museum at Eastriggs tells the extraordinary story of HM Factory Gretna, a vast munitions factory built during the First World War that was, at the time, the largest in the world, employing tens of thousands of workers, many of them women, to produce explosives for the war effort. Its unusual name comes from a description by Arthur Conan Doyle, who visited the factory and likened the paste-like explosive mixture being made by hand to a devilish porridge. The scale of the wartime operation, largely forgotten today, comes as a genuine surprise to most visitors. There's an admission charge, and the museum is fully indoors and accessible.
