The wooded grounds surrounding Lews Castle in Stornoway offer a genuinely unexpected patch of mature woodland this far into the Outer Hebrides, where trees are otherwise scarce across much of the largely treeless landscape. Waymarked paths wind through the estate, planted in the 19th century by the castle's original owners, giving families an easy, sheltered walk close to the town centre. The castle itself, now home to a museum and cafe, sits at the heart of the grounds, giving the option to extend a walk with an indoor stop. It's free to visit the grounds, with parking available and most main paths suitable for buggies.
