The blackhouse at Arnol was lived in right up until the 1960s, which is part of what makes it so vivid: this is not a reconstruction but the real thing, preserved with its byre for animals attached to the living quarters, a peat fire burning permanently in the middle of the floor, and no chimney to let the smoke out - it simply drifted up through the thatch. Historic Environment Scotland staff are usually on hand to explain how a whole family, and often their livestock, shared this single smoky, warm space through Hebridean winters. It's a genuinely eye-opening stop for children used to modern houses, though the smoke and low doorways mean it isn't the easiest space for buggies or wheelchairs.
