Tobermory's harbourfront, lined with brightly painted buildings in blues, yellows and pinks, is instantly recognisable to a generation of children as the setting for the CBeebies series Balamory, filmed here and still drawing families keen to spot familiar doorways. Beyond the television connection, it's simply an attractive, easy place to wander, with cafes, small shops and boat trips departing from the harbour for wildlife-watching in season. It's Mull's main town, so it's a natural base for exploring the rest of the island as well as a destination in its own right. It's free to visit, with parking nearby and no shortage of places to stop for food.
