About this place
One of Europe's largest forest parks and a Dark Sky Park, with family cycling and walking trails.
Covering a vast area of southern Scotland, Galloway Forest Park is one of the largest forest parks in Europe, with an extensive network of family-friendly cycling and walking trails winding through woodland, past lochs and up towards open hill ground, including the Merrick, the highest peak in southern Scotland. It was also one of the first places in the world to be designated a Dark Sky Park, thanks to the near-total absence of light pollution, making it a genuinely spectacular spot for stargazing on a clear night. It's free to visit, with several car parks giving access to different parts of the forest, and facilities vary by location.
