About this place

Medieval castle famous for film and TV appearances with interactive family trails.

Doune Castle's real fame today comes from film and television rather than its own considerable medieval history - it's instantly recognisable to fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which was filmed almost entirely here, and it later doubled as Castle Leoch in Outlander and an early version of Winterfell in Game of Thrones. An audio guide narrated by Monty Python's Terry Jones adds a good dose of humour to the visit for anyone who knows the film, while the castle's genuine 14th-century architecture and well-preserved great hall give plenty to explore regardless. There's an admission charge, and the spiral stairs and uneven floors make parts of the castle less accessible.
