About this place

17th-century castle with gardens, woodland walks, and indoor exhibits for families.

This 16th-century tower house is known for its remarkably preserved painted ceilings, decorated with vivid scenes and mottoes that have survived largely intact for over 400 years, giving a rare glimpse into how richly decorated Scottish interiors once looked. Outside, the National Trust for Scotland grounds include a series of walled garden rooms with clipped yew hedges dating back to 1702, alongside woodland trails that suit a longer family walk. It works well as a half-day visit combining the house tour with time in the gardens. There's an admission charge, a cafe on site, and while the gardens are largely accessible, the historic tower involves narrow stairs.
