Remarkably preserved Neolithic village, older than Stonehenge and the pyramids.
Skara Brae is Europe's most complete Neolithic village, and its stone furniture - box beds, dressers, even a primitive fitted wardrobe - has survived because the whole settlement was buried under sand for thousands of years, only uncovered when a storm stripped the dunes away in 1850. Walkways let you look down into the houses much as their Bronze Age discoverers first did, and a full-scale reconstructed house nearby lets children step inside and see how a family actually lived some 5,000 years ago. It's part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, alongside the Ring of Brodgar and Standing Stones of Stenness, both an easy drive away if there's time to see more than one.
