About this place

Large sea cave near Durness combining a collapsed sinkhole with a waterfall inside.

Near the village of Durness, Smoo Cave combines two dramatic features in one site: a huge sea cave carved into the limestone cliffs by the Atlantic, and further inside, a collapsed sinkhole through which a waterfall crashes down into an inner chamber. A path leads down from the car park to a viewing platform at the mouth of the cave, from where the waterfall is visible without needing to go further in, though boat trips into the inner chamber run in season for those wanting a closer look. It's a genuinely striking natural sight rather than a built attraction. It's free to visit the main viewing areas, with a charge for boat trips, and the path down involves steps.
