Sub-tropical garden on the shores of Loch Ewe, remarkable for what grows this far north.
Created from 1862 onwards by Osgood Mackenzie on an exposed, rocky headland on the shore of Loch Ewe, Inverewe is a remarkable example of what the Gulf Stream makes possible this far north - subtropical and exotic plants thrive here at roughly the same latitude as parts of Siberia, thanks to the warming effect of the surrounding sea. Winding paths lead through dense, richly planted woodland gardens with views out over the loch at various points. Now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, it's one of the most unexpected gardens in the Highlands. There's an admission charge, and while main paths are accessible, some sections involve slopes and steps.
