Falkland was a favourite country retreat of the Stewart monarchs, and Mary, Queen of Scots spent some of her happiest childhood summers here - the palace still holds the oldest real tennis court in Britain still in use, built for James V in 1539. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, the palace interiors and gardens give a real sense of royal life away from the formality of Edinburgh, and a grass maze in the garden is a popular stop for children. The surrounding village of Falkland, with its historic streets, makes a pleasant extension to the visit. There's an admission charge, and while the gardens are accessible, parts of the historic building involve stairs.
