Ornate chapel built by Italian prisoners of war from two Nissen huts and scrap metal.
During the Second World War, Italian prisoners of war held on Lamb Holm to build the Churchill Barriers transformed two corrugated-iron Nissen huts into this small, ornate chapel. Working with scrap metal, leftover paint and whatever materials they could find, artist Domenico Chiocchetti and his fellow prisoners created an interior of painted saints, trompe l'oeil stonework and delicate wrought-iron screens that looks nothing like its humble shell from outside. Chiocchetti returned decades later to help restore his own paintings, and the chapel is still lovingly maintained today. It's a striking, unexpected stop for children curious about the war, and free to visit, though there's no cafe or facilities on site itself.
