The late Queen Mother's former Caithness home, with gardens and animal centre.
This Caithness castle was bought in near-ruin by the future Queen Mother in 1952 and restored as her private summer home, where she continued to holiday for the rest of her long life, making it one of the more personal royal properties open to the public. The gardens she cultivated, along with an animal centre featuring rare and native breeds, give the visit a homely, lived-in feel rather than the grandeur of a state palace. As the most northerly inhabited castle on the Scottish mainland, its position alone makes for a memorable stop. There's an admission charge, and while the gardens are accessible, the castle interior has some stairs.
