Ancient seat of Clan Maclean, on a headland with sweeping views of the Sound of Mull.
Duart Castle guards the Sound of Mull from its headland position and has been the seat of Clan Maclean for centuries, though it fell into ruin after the clan backed the losing side in the Jacobite risings and was only restored in the early 20th century by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, the 26th chief. Inside, rooms furnished across different periods of the castle's history give a strong sense of its long story, while the battlements offer wide views over the water towards the mainland. It's one of the more substantial castle visits on Mull. There's an admission charge, a tea room on site, and some areas involve narrow stairs.
