St Mary's Loch is the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders, set within the quiet Yarrow Valley and long celebrated by writers including Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg, the 'Ettrick Shepherd', whose statue stands beside the water. A path along the shore gives an easy, scenic walk, and watersports including sailing and kayaking are available in season for those wanting to get out on the water. Its relatively remote setting, well away from the Borders' larger towns, gives it a genuinely peaceful, unhurried atmosphere. It's free to visit the loch shore, with charges for watersports activities, and parking available at several points along the water.
