Built in 1848 to carry the railway across the River Ayr near Mauchline, Ballochmyle Viaduct remains the highest railway viaduct in Britain, its central arch spanning the gorge at a height that still impresses visitors standing beneath it today. Nearby, a set of prehistoric cup-and-ring carvings on an exposed rock face add a much older layer of history to the same stretch of countryside, among the finest examples of this kind of ancient rock art in Scotland. The combination of Victorian engineering and prehistoric carving makes for an unusually varied short walk. It's free to visit, with limited parking nearby and paths that involve some uneven, wooded terrain.
