This working farm and heritage centre near Livingston combines animals and outdoor play areas with exhibits on West Lothian's often-overlooked history as the birthplace of the world's shale oil industry, pioneered by the chemist James Young in the 19th century. A narrow-gauge railway runs through part of the site, and craft workshops and seasonal events - particularly around Halloween and Christmas - add extra reasons to visit at different times of year. The mix of farm animals, play areas and genuine industrial history gives it more depth than a typical petting farm. There's an admission charge, a cafe on site, and most areas are accessible.
