The distinctive, multi-peaked outline of Bennachie is one of Aberdeenshire's most recognisable landmarks, its highest point, the rocky Mither Tap, visible for miles around and long claimed by some historians as the likely site of the Battle of Mons Graupius between Roman and Pictish forces, though the exact location remains disputed. A network of forest trails of varying length radiate from the visitor centre at Essons, giving families a choice between a gentle woodland walk and a more serious hike to the summit.
