Vast, sweeping sandy beach on the west coast of Lewis, one of the most spectacular in the Outer Hebrides.
This enormous sweep of sand on the west coast of Lewis is regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Scotland, its scale meaning there's space for a full family day out even when the tide is well in. It was near here, in 1831, that a set of 12th-century walrus ivory chess pieces, now known as the Lewis Chessmen, were discovered, and are now split between the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland. The beach's remote setting, with hills rising behind it and few buildings in view, gives it a genuinely wild, unspoiled feel. It's free to visit, with parking available nearby, and the beach itself is flat and easy to walk on at low tide.
